When the people of Australia and the world look at Moreland, I want them to see highly educated, skilled, tolerant and confident people making their own way in modern Australia. I want them to see a city where everyone shares in the rewards. I want them to see what a strong community can bring to one community so proudly diverse. A city where fairness and opportunity really means something .
I want them to think and say I wish I could have a home, a job or a business in the city of Moreland. AH

In 2011, it was brought to the notice of Moreland Council that the private owner, of the land behind PIEDIMONTE’S IGA Supermarket, had lodged a planning application to construct blocks of apartments on it.
This would have created a huge loss in revenue for traders and shoppers alike and there would be nowhere for motorists to park and shops were at risk to close.
Anthony contacted the CEO re the planning application and the devastating effect it would have on both the business premises and the public.
Anthony also called an open meeting at the Town Hall with all the traders and the land owner. After much debate and negotiation , councillor Helou suggested that the council will be heading towards compulsory acquisition. The land owner realised the demise and successfully and finally gave a new lease. Hence the car park is still very busy today with happy shoppers and happy traders.
There was a resolution passed at Moreland Council in 2011, that the Newlands Senior Citizens Centre at Murray Road, Coburg, would be demolished due to a crack in the wall, deeming the building unsafe.
Anthony Helou voted against this resolution and the next day approached the CEO, with intention to put a recession motion to stop the resolution, at least for the next meeting.
However, Anthony had a private Engineer assess the cracked wall, and it was suggested it could be repaired and the building would be saved from demolition.
Another resolution was passed at the following Council meeting to repair and renovate the centre. It was a great achievement for all the community.
Anthony Helou has always stood for and stood by the residents and traders of the City of Moreland. Beautifying and saving the heritage of Moreland, he knows too well.
Council discussions argued that there wasn’t enough funds for two pools in Coburg and that the outdoor pool, that had been used for the Olympics, had to close.
Some members of the Council favoured the newer indoor pool and gym, which are located near the corner of Bell Street and Sydney Road.
The work of Anthony Helou and the local Residents kept the outdoor Coburg Olympic swimming pool open to the public.
However, Anthony Helou opposed the closure and negotiated so that residents’ families could continue to enjoy, the ambience of the outdoor pools.
Jones Park is located at the bottom of Albion Street in East Brunswick, near Merri Creek. The site was a landfill for years and the old Brunswick Council wanted to turn it into a Transfer Station. Anthony helou and the residents living near to the site, fought against the Council for over 3 years. The Council finally agreed to move the Transfer Station to another spot in Brunswick. After Brunswick Council and Coburg Council amalgamated, they turned the land into one of the most beautiful and family friendly parks in the City of Moreland.
Many years ago there was a derelict, neglected building near the old rail lines, on Nicolson Street/ Brunswick Road corner. It had been empty and unused for years. Anthony Helou, as the portofolio councillor for city work proposed to the CEO, that it should be turned into a Café and Bicycle Hub as it is right beside the bike tracks and would be a revenue maker for Moreland. Success from that day forward. Great coffee, great bikes, parts and repairs and thousands of happy cyclists.
The Future is Electric
“The funny thing is sometimes people walk away and leave the car engine on, because there is no noise”.
Looking forward to see electrical charged cars will be soon on our streets.
Anthony Helou , a candidate who will make a difference .
Keep Our City Tidy and Clean!
Then there was CLEAN UP OR PAY UP. An initiative to have property owners clean up their act – derelict and unkempt buildings and empty land, were issues that culminated in fines.
Anthony and his colleagues sat in a chair at Victoria Street Mall and had their heads and beards shaved off, on BLUEY DAY.
This event is celebrated every year to raise funds for the Royal Children’s Hospital and is supported by Police, Ambulance, Fire Brigade and many emergency services.
They successfully raised a lot of money on that day!
When Anthony Helou was Mayor he successfully brought a hand shake and amicable deal (which many tried to do and failed ) to the table, after it was sadly, cricket versus football. A fight was on for the sporting clubs as both wanted to use Coburg City Oval. It became a nightmare for Moreland Council.
Both Cricket and Football clubs finally signed a Memorandum of understanding under the skillful negotiating of Mayor Anthony Helou .
I share the bicycle vision for the City of Moreland
I pledge to encourage recreation and commuter cycling in the City of Moreland.
I will endeavor to incorporate bicycle matters in Council's corporate planning process and insure appropriate funds are provided on the council budget to provide for cyclists .
Insure all new road constructions incorporate bicycle works by including bicycle design, specifications in work contract .
Provide bicycle routes leading to appropriate destination, shopping centre , community centre, railway stations, supported by end of trip facilities ( Parking rails).
Set an appropriate budget to implement bicycle facilities / programmes over 5 years .
Provide bicycle facilities compatible with appropriate speed limits ensuring a safe cycling environment;
Identify sources of income from agencies eg: Vic Roads, Melbourne Parks and Waterways State Government etc.
All bicycle facilities provided need to be safe and convenient for users;
Ensure all traffic management devices do not disadvantage bicycle riders;
Establish a bicycle advisory committee:
a. Consisting of a councillor, engineer, bicycle user group, members – recreation and planning officer; to assist Council and provide advise.
b. Consulting the local bicycle users group / cycling individuals and local community groups and businesses .
Council should provide on call hard waste collection services .
This new service replaces the current one where rubbish stays on the foot paths for days , this is bad for the environment and causes hazards and safety issues . dispose of unwanted house hold items , once collected the material will be sorted at the transfer station and recycled wherever possible. Need to make a booking before putting out your hard waste .
This will help keeping Moreland streets clean and tidy .
PS , Council , passed a resolution as from next year our garbage bin will be collected fortnightly, instead weekly as its now . This not acceptable, if elected, I will work hard to reverse this decision.
Brunswick Gym located at the rear of Brunswick incubator between Albert and Victoria Streets, Brunswick.
Many years ago the state government decided to demolish it and turn the site to a car park.
Anthony Helou ran a successful campaign and saved the Gym from demolition ” to build something similar would had cost over three millions plus in today market“.
Now the Gym still going and outstand enjoyed by thousands of young people from all over Moreland.
The election is over, but my commitments to our City will never end.
